Mark 8:27-38 Who is Jesus – the big question!

Mark 8:27-30

Who do you say I am?

    May go on to 31-38.

(But focus will be on disciples called to decide where they stand based on what they have seen and heard at this point. )

Evidences -.thru chapters

    – Glimpses

    – Powerful revelations

    – Slowness on the pick-up

29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Why now?

        Mid-Mark

Mid – terms on way to final

What’s in this question?

   1) not…

         – Cling to autonomy;

         – Pursue self will

               Little kids : so obvious

As adults , disguise self will

         – accidental life?

         – void of meaning

Where giving and love have no place ( unless a tool to manipulate to feed self)

        2) Messiah / Christ

                – changes everything

                      Why we are here

                      What we do

                      Value of life, love

                      Meaning

                      Morality

TEACHING THE DISCIPLES

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected

33he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

      What human concerns ??

          Vs. 35…

          Vs. 36…

          Vs. 37…

          Vs. 38….

          Others…?

           – power , prestige , good life

           – freedom?

           – Roman getting justice?

           – self rule

      What are your:

              “preconditions, desires”?

              “Assumptions”

              “expectations “

TEACHING THE CROWD

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

———

35For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
