KIDS AT THE WELL

For Kids @ the Well:
This week we’ll learn of the story from John 3 when Jesus explains eternal life to Nicodemus.
When we put our faith in him, God gives us eternal life. In return, God wants us to give him our whole lives. He wants to be our Lord and our Savior. That means that he directs and guides our lives, and we look for ways to serve and honor him.
Enjoy viewing this video as a family and work on memorizing John 3:16 if you’d like.

Vs 2-5 Text Summary – intro of terms

The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.

    Lead (not) – Voice (not).    B.  A

Chiastic structure  – at the center is the work of the good shepherd

GOOD SHEPHERD

Modern perception – tendercare and concern for flock

Biblical – don’t overlook Shepherd as autocrat, sovereignty

    Apply

    Sovereign : highest leader, above

We may feel overwhelmed, yet virus didn’t take Jesus by surprise. He is sovereign over us and is over those things that threaten us. We need not worry.

Nothing can snatch us out of His hand. He has us!

JOHN 10:6-10

Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them. Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

2 different roles:

Vs 2 : The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

Vs 7 : Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep

VIDEO ILLUS : parent trap. 60’s and late 90’s.

DUAL ROLES

        Played self in dual roles

    – Shows people way and He is the way (14:6)

    – I am the bread of life ( 6:35) and I give the bread ( 6:51)

    – Speaks the truth (8:45) and is the Truth (14:6)

Here Jesus    : I am the door & the Shepherd who goes thru the door/gate

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired handis not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs awaybecause he is a hired handand cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.

         Hired hand –

         – working for a paycheck. Not the owner. No pride of ownership and care

of possession. Will abandon sheep at sign of trouble

More Structure of note 2

I am the good shepherd – I lay down my life

                  Hired hand – runs away

Run away – the hired hand

I am the good shepherd – I lay down my life

A] REPETITION !  Structure and themes

Compare

        Good Shepherd saves….

Pharisees trying to kill…. the blind man CAST OUT, the people in general enslaved…

      Trying to kill Jesus!

John 8:58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.”

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but

Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the

Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for

blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.

B] AUTHORITY

17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again.18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it downof my own accord. I have authority to lay it downand authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

( I am, I lay…).    Verse 18.   No One !!

                  Build up to Passion week

19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.

             John Chapter 9:

16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does

not keep the Sabbath.”  But others asked, “How can a sinner perform

such signs?” So they were divided.

20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

JESUS WORDS. … are pivotally important !,

19-21 Jesus words cause division.     No middle ground.

Eph. 6:17....  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

Hebrew 4:12 -12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  1. The section ends with the BLIND MAN reference…
