Woe on unrepentant towns
Matthew 11:20-30 (NIV)
Woe on Unrepentant Towns
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[a] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
The Father Revealed in the Son
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Goal is repentance – always
MATTHEW 11:20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
John came calling to repentance – change of ways
The attitude of teachers
Pride, Superiority, Arrogance
The attitude of ‘ people’
Listening, repenting, being baptized
“ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.””

No mystery here
Studying this Word for coming up in 40 years and the depth of wisdom on here – I’m still discovering. I’m not sure there is a point where something new can come of this Study…
People DID HEAR, DID GET IT, DID REPENT…. and some did not
Apply to ourselves?
How well do we listen?
Do we study this Word? Dissect it, mine it, weigh it…. or dismiss it without any in depth analysis?
Like layers of an onion….
There is a great depth of mystery here, which we cannot hope to fathom. The gospel was not preached to those who would have repented if they had heard it, and it was preached to those who did not repent when they listened to it even from the lips of Christ himself.
Luke 12:47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
“Wow to you “
(Spurgeon) – ‘Listen to that, you gospel-hardened sinners, you who have heard, and heard, and heard, but have not repented. See how great is your sin, for you have rejected what others would have received if it had been presented to them. See how your guilt accumulates, and its punishment also.’

ILLUS – why slow adoption of technology
LAS VEGAS — Smart thermostats. Smart appliances. Motorized blinds and shades. Glass-break sensors. Asset-protection sensors. You name the task or function in the home and someone is bound to create an internet-connected version that you can control remotely from your smartphone.
Yesterday at the International CES, for example, home improvement giant Lowe’s announced a new wave of products and services associated with Iris, the company’s tool that allows you to customize and monitor your internet-connected home devices — like, say, a water shut-off valve that cuts supply when a leak is detected — from a single app on your smartphone or computer.
ILLUS – Billy Beane – Oakland A’s GM and “moneyball”
Beane and DePodesta set about mining decades of data on hundreds of individual players in order to figure out the best strategy for recruiting good players. Their analysis revealed that baseball scouts were overlooking statistics that could accurately predict how many runs a player would score. In short, scouts were clueless when it came to accurately valuing talent.
Drawing from these conclusions, Beane realized that players who scored high on these overlooked statistics were probably undervalued by the bidding market. He began seeking out these “bargain” players, or players who were flying under the radar of other teams but whose statistics suggested that they would score runs.
Despite pushback from baseball scouts, Beane pulled the trigger on his radical new strategy for acquiring players. Beane bet big time on analytics and his efforts paid off. The A’s started to win, even against baseball teams that had much larger budgets. The team became the first team in over 100 years of American League baseball to win 20 consecutive games.
Vs 29-30 invitation….
J C Ryle exhorts us “Beloved brethren, see that you refuse not Him who speaks to you this day. If a letter came to you from the ruler of this country you would not despise it. If you were sick, and advice came from a wise physician, you would not reject it. If you were in danger, and counsel came from your best and truest friend, you would not make light of it. Then hear the words that Jesus sends to you this day. Listen to the King of kings. Then body and soul shall be His. (Come Unto Me)
